Intergenerational equity and sustainability: a large population approach

چکیده

Abstract Patient and Pareto responsive (pPr) societal preferences were introduced studied in Khan Stinchcombe (2018). This paper develops a tractable subclass of the pPr that satisfy strong equity criterion formulated to match intuitions results for large but finite models. In population models where number happiness future people is stochastic, only optimal policies require sustainability (resp. an abundance effort) presence irreversible difficult reverse) negative externalities suffered by generations. Partially ordering increasing degrees inequality aversion over generations, more averse give rise choices are counterintutive from ethics viewpoint smaller sets problems.

Interpreting Sustainability in Economic Terms: Dynamic Efficiency Plus Intergenerational Equity

Economists have confined the concept of ‘sustainability’ to intertemporal distributional equity. We propose a broader definition, combining dynamic efficiency and intergenerational equity, and relate it to two concepts from neoclassical economics: potential Pareto-improvements and inter-personal compensation.  2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Intergenerational Equity

Axiomatic analysis of intergenerational social preferences over infinite streams of well-being faces the following dilemma. Equal treatment of generations combined with sensitivity for the interests of each generation rules out explicitly defined preferences that can rank any pair of infinite well-being streams. Hence, either intergenerational social preferences must be incomplete or equal trea...

Sustainability and Intergenerational Justice

As temporary custodians of the planet, those who are alive at any given time can do a better or worse job of handing it on to their successors. I take that simple thought to animate concerns about what we ought to be doing to preserve conditions that will make life worth living (or indeed liveable at all) in the future, and especially in the time after those currently alive will have died (‘fut...

Equitable intergenerational preferences and sustainability

There are about 7 billion people currently alive. Just above 100 billion people have ever lived (Haub, 2011). Hence, the ratio of people who have ever lived in the past to people living today is only 15 to 1. With 500 million years left of the earth as acceptable habitat for humans, population being stable at a sustainable level of 1 billion with an average life-length of 70 years, the ratio of...

Can intergenerational equity be operationalized?

A long Utilitarian tradition has the ideal of equal regard for all individuals, both those now living and those yet to be born. The literature formalizes this ideal as asking for a preference relation on the space of infinite utility streams that is complete, transitive, invariant to finite permutations, and respects the Pareto ordering; an ethical preference relation, for short. This paper arg...
